Is MSG a flavor?

 Sweet, Salty, Sour and Bitter. Those are the major ‘flavors’ our tongues are supposed to recognize, right? But a few scientists have now picked up we have a fifth receptor, something the Japanese called ‘umami’. Its how they developed MSG (which I always though was a salty preservative). Apparently, its more along the lines of ‘savory’ and causes our body to crave the proteins. Some of the studies also showed that MSG isn’t bad for us. Who knew?

Foods high in umami include parmesan and other aged cheeses; anchovies; soy sauce, and fish sauces.
